How many cats have you had in your lifetime? If you’ve known more than a few, you probably know that not all cats appreciate hugs and that the ones who actually enjoy it are rare. A “cat hugging owner” photo like this isn’t easy to come by.
It takes a huge amount of trust on the part of a cat to hug and be hugged by a human. It means letting go of all defenses and exposing your most vulnerable body parts.
It’s something you can see happening between a mother cat and her kittens. You can also see it with closely-bonded cats. And yes, some humans are fortunate enough to have a very close relationship with their kitty. Close enough for that special “cat hugging owner” situation to take place.
How to get to the “cat hugging owner” point?
Some people claim that this kind of close bond is more likely to develop when you hand-rear an orphan kitten. That may be so. I think a lot depends on the temperament of the cat as well. One thing is for sure, if your kitty tends to hug you then you’re doing a good job making her feel safe and secure around you.
If you want to improve your relationship with your cat (always a good idea! Regardless of this “cat hugging owner” concept), you have to make sure you never ever punish or discipline her in any way. Helping her adjust unwanted behaviors must be done in different ways. If you’re not sure how to go about this, here’s an excellent article on behavior modification in cats – the Do’s and Dont’s.
